BA Philosophy, UK

philosophy

I chose to study philosophy as I have always been interested in the 'big questions' about life and wanted to learn how to formulate answers to these in a logical and critical way.

Studying philosophy taught me never to take anything on face value and to analyse all my beliefs so that they form a coherent whole. I am definitely more open-minded and tend to investigate each side of any given debate. I feel philosophy is a very important subject that teaches one how to think clearly and make good decisions. Studying per se has also reminded me that to achieve most things one must be disciplined, hard-working and organised.

I studied by distance learning, so it was a challenge to know that I had fully grasped the subjects for which I was studying. I persevered, going over and over texts which were causing confusion. Completing essays after reading many challenging texts and making endless notes was also very rewarding, especially when some of the texts had initially seemed almost incomprehensible. I also studied whilst working full-time, so I had to devise some very strict timetables and keep focusing on my goal.

A further benefit of gaining the degree was that it increased my self-esteem and I now feel able to take on more responsibilities at work.

I enjoyed the experience so much I am now studying for an MA in Philosophical Studies and would like to continue studying until I can eventually teach philosophy.
