Having gained one of the top marks in the world in his University of London International Programmes Bachelor of Laws (LLB) exams, Teo Eu John is now looking forward to a legal career. He said his ambition was to contribute to the legal landscape: “Legal argument in court can change the current status quo and set the law on a new path. My hope is that I will someday be able to achieve such a feat.”

John’s sister is also a lawyer and he said it was her passion for human rights that inspired him to study law. “The University of London International Programmes was an obvious choice due to its recognition and affordability”, he said.

John believes that having an LLB is an advantage, whatever your career path, as it allows you to develop a legal mind. The study of one aspect of law, jurisprudence, was a particular eye opener: “It was not confined to merely procedure or substance of the law, but rather its emphasis was on why law exists. The subject highlighted inequalities perceived by different groups of people. I realised that law is not as it seems. It depends on who you are, what you do, and where you are in life.”

To keep himself motivated during difficult study times, John reminded himself that countless others have been through the same situation: “Ultimately there will be a pot of gold at the end of the winding road.”

And what were the highlights of John’s study experience? “The weekend classes at a local college, intensive revision sessions, meeting new people and studying a stone’s throw away from Petaling Street, Malaysia's ‘Chinatown’.”
