Returning to academic studies after a 20-year gap: Alessandra Theuma
The programme equipped me with the frame of mind necessary to take the Institute on a growth trajectory into the 21st century

The University of London International Programmes has an excellent reputation and offers the correct mix of depth, breadth and rigour that I was looking for when I decided to further my studies. Plus it  allows students the flexibility to study at their own pace, which was essential to me.

I am employed as a Marketing Director at St Martin’s Institute of IT in Malta. My role involves overseeing internal and external organisational communication, and attracting and recruiting students both from the local and the international markets. I am also involved in the teaching of accounting and economics at the Institute.

I took over the role of Marketing Director 12 months ago, at a stage when I was already well into the MBA programme. At that point I was able to identify with the material I had learnt and apply it at work. I revamped the student recruitment process and gave a new dimension and direction to the way in which the Institute markets.

I like to study in the evenings and on weekends and I discipline myself to try to put in a few hours every day. The children enjoy seeing me working at my desk because they feel we are all at the same level, with mummy back at school doing her reading, research, writing and preparing for exams!

I am a 45-year-old working married mum of three: two teenagers aged 17 and 14 and a 7-year-old girl. So I do lead a rather hectic life! I seem to do well – or rather better – when I am under pressure, and I like to be busy. Admittedly I get a lot of help from my husband and father with driving the children around. At home we all encourage each other, education and self-development are held in high regard. We all support each other and pitch in to help one another in the most stressful times of the year - it’s a great recipe and excellent moral support.  We are all very proud of each other’s achievements.

"Do attend the plenary sessions and participate in all activities. It is a great opportunity to meet a diverse group of individuals of a similar academic capability."

Embarking on the programme is a commitment which stretches over a considerable stretch of time. Enjoy your studies. Do not consider the course to be an added burden, but rather as a vehicle to update and improve your knowledge. Find a study companion with whom you can bounce off ideas, problems and questions. It is fun, of great value, and an efficient way of learning. Do attend the plenary sessions and participate in all activities. It is a great opportunity to meet a diverse group of individuals of a similar academic capability. Think ahead, schedule your work and stick to your plans!

This MBA was designed in a structure that seemed perfect for my needs. I could study at my own pace, the study units gave the right mix of subjects to launch someone into the practical business world of the 21st century, and you were required to spend two weeks on campus at Royal Holloway, University of London, where all you had to do was focus on your studies.

I have learnt immensely from the experience. Not only have I had the opportunity to update myself and widen my horizons academically, but I also had the opportunity to meet many interesting people from all over the world during the plenary sessions and also through online interaction, even making some business contacts.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the case studies which were presented and discussed, as these gave a proper insight into modern marketing strategies and practices."

I managed to go back to studying after having completed my first degree over 20 years ago. In my MBA I managed to do exceptionally well in the areas I thought I had least competence, so that proves that if you try hard enough, commit yourself  and persevere you can succeed. I would like to proceed to the next level in my academic development and maybe publish some research papers.
