Examinations
Administrative Check of your Examination Results
1. General information about your examination results
The notification of results will provide your mark for each unit, paper or course you have taken
and an overall result for the examination session, wherever this is required.
Candidates should be aware of the following information: -
- Each script is marked by two Examiners working independently who subsequently agree a final
mark.
- The confirmed result is determined at a Board meeting at which all Examiners are represented
and includes External Examiners who have a specific responsibility to ensure parity of standards.
- There is no provision in the Regulations for the consideration of an appeal on academic grounds;
the decision of the Board of Examiners is final.
- All results are checked by the Student Assessment Office to ensure that the marks awarded by
the Examiners are correctly allocated to the individual student record.
- Included on the Notice to Candidates, which accompanies the Admission Notice for the examination,
there is information about how to inform the Board of Examiners about any illness or problem
which may have affected your performance in the examination. It is also found in paragraph 10.2
of the General Regulations for all degree programmes, except the Bachelor of Divinity (New Regulations),
where it can be found in paragraph 4.19. That instruction explains that you should immediately
inform the Student Assessment Office in writing, and provide a medical certificate or other appropriate
certification, in support of your circumstances. Please note that any notification received more
than three weeks after the date of the last examination will not be taken into
account by the Examiners.
- Medical or other evidence received within the specified three-week period is presented to the
Board of Examiners and considered by them when they meet to determine results. Medical or other
evidence not presented within the specified period cannot normally be submitted at a later date.
- The University will carry out an administrative check of the examination results, upon payment
of a fee, where you have a concern that an administrative error may have occurred. Please
note that marks are routinely checked and re-checked before results are sent out to
students.
- For the academic year 2009-2010, 98.95% of examination results that were subject to an administrative
recheck had no error detected. While it is our aim to ensure that there are no administrative
errors on any examination result, mistakes do occasionally happen but please be aware that
the likelihood of an administrative error being identified on your script is extremely low.
2. To request a further ADMINISTRATIVE check of your results
Summary
An administrative re-check involves:
- Checking that the script has been marked independently by two examiners
- A check to ensure that the mark of the Examiners was properly calculated and recorded on the
notification of results (See below for a more detailed explanation)
However prior to deciding whether you want your paper to be RE-CHECKED please consider the following:
- This is NOT a remark
- The content of your script will NOT be looked at again by the Examiners
- There CANNOT be an appeal on academic grounds
Process
Should you be concerned that an administrative error may have been made in the calculation of your
result, you should request this service by following the secure online payment link. This link
is currently unavailable as the deadline to apply for a recheck has passed.
Please note the fee is £50 for each paper that you wish to have checked. All
payments will be made in £ sterling.
Please be advised that we accept Debit and Credit Card payments only (with the exception of American
Express).
In order for your examination results to be checked, you must: - Submit your request for re-check
by the following dates:

31st January for examinations conducted in September /October /November
Please note: requests received after these dates will not be possible as examination
scripts will no longer be available.
If you have any other queries about this process please email: uolia.rechecks@london.ac.uk.
3. How your results will be checked
Upon receipt of your request you will be sent an email acknowledgement. The CPQ Directorate is
not involved in the marking of scripts, the conduct of the Examination Board or the administrative
processes that lead to your results being recorded and will therefore provide an independent check
of your results. Please be aware that there may be a delay in issuing a final decision. However,
we will endeavour to keep you informed of the progress of your re-check. The re-check process involves:
-
- A check to ensure that the script has been marked independently by two Examiners.
- A check to ensure that the agreed mark of the two Examiners was correctly recorded and that
this was the mark shown on the notification of results. Should any difference be observed further
checks to clarify the reason for this will be undertaken on your behalf.
- A check to ensure that any claim for mitigation submitted by the candidate within the specified
time limit, and any other relevant matters relating to the results, was presented to, and considered
by, the Board of Examiners in accordance with agreed procedures.
The University is unable to provide individual comments or advice relating to the performance
of an individual candidate at a particular examination. General information can be found in the
Examiners’ Commentaries which are published later in the year and provide helpful advice.
Should you have any questions with regard to the process for checking results, which have not been
answered by the above information, please write to the Director, CPQ at the email address above.
4. Outcome of results check
You will be informed by email of the outcome of the administrative re-check.
Please note, in the event that an error is found the fee payable for the administrative
check will be refunded. If a mistake is found it will be corrected and this will be confirmed to
you in writing.
