Accreditation of prior learning

Accreditation off prior learning was formerly known as 'exemption' and is also known as ‘credit transfer’ or ‘advanced standing’ at other institutions.

You may be able to apply for accredition of prior learning from up to the value of four full level 100 courses on the Standard Route of the BSc degrees if you have covered a similar syllabus in the same breadth and depth as part of a previous qualification, which has been awarded within the past five years preceding your application for accreditation of prior learning.

To be eligible to apply for exemption you must satisfy us that you have already passed examinations that equate in level, content and standard to the level 100 course(s) that form part of your degree.

If you are awarded an accreditation of prior learning from a particular course you do not then have to take that course as part of your degree. If you are awarded accreditation of prior learning for the maximum number of exemptions (four courses) you may be able to complete your degree in two years provided the regulations for your chosen degree permit it.

You must formally apply to be considered for accreditation of prior learning, both where this is discretionary and automatic. We can only start considering whether you are eligible once we have processed your application. You must also be eligible to register for the programme.

Whether or not you have been granted accreditation of prior learning will be detailed in your decision letter. Where accreditation of prior learning is granted, it is only valid for a limited period and this period will also be given in your decision letter. If you do not attempt any examinations during this period, the offer will expire. If this happens and you still want the accreditation of prior learning to count towards your degree you will need to make a further application. It is not guaranteed that you will still qualify for accreditation of prior learning.

The classification of your degree will not be affected by the accredition of prior learning that you receive.

For further information please refer to Section 2. Credit transfer and accreditation of prior learning in the Regulations.
