Law unit APL 2

Applications for APL from one or more Foundation law units may be made by students who have passed the following examinations within the five years prior to the date of application. Students applying for exemption in this category will be asked to pay the exemption application fee:

  1. Professional examinations leading to practice as a lawyer outside England and Wales;
  2. Level 4 of the Professional Higher Diploma in Law of the Institute of Legal Executives, provided that within this examination the student has passed subjects corresponding to the Intermediate level subjects of the University of London and provided also that the student has taken and passed Level 3 of the Professional Diploma in Law of the Institute. Exemption will be given automatically from the paper in Common law reasoning and institutions and the exemption application fee will not be charged for this subject;
  3. The Diploma in Legal Studies of the University of Hong Kong (SPACE) is accepted as meeting the requirement of a pass in the Level 3 of the Professional Diploma in Law of the Institute of Legal Executives.

APL from all four Foundation law units will be awarded automatically to those students who have successfully completed the whole of the following examination within the five years prior to the date of application. Students applying under (f) will be awarded APL from Criminal Law only. Students applying for APL in this category will not be asked to pay the APL application fee:

  1. The examination for the award of a degree in Laws by a university level institution acceptable to the University of London for this purpose
  2. An Intermediate or equivalent examination of an appropriate degree at a university  which is acceptable to the University of London for this purpose
  3. The Examination for Call to the Bar Standards Board of England and Wales conducted by the General Council of the Bar Standards Board
  4. The Qualifying Examinations of the Solicitors Regulation Authority of England and Wales
  5. The Common Professional Examination
  6. Promotion examinations to the rank of Police Inspector in the United Kingdom or Hong Kong (exemption from Criminal Law only). Applications on the basis of police examinations elsewhere will be considered on an individual basis and the exemption application fee will be payable.

In exceptional circumstances, a student who has substantial practical experience as a lawyer over a significant number of years may also apply for APL. Students applying for APL in this category will be asked to pay the APL application fee.
