Selection process

Winners will be selected for first, second and third place by the Official judging panel.

The judging panel will select the best 12 photographs overall, then make a final selection for first, second and third prize winners from this group. The remaining 9 photos from the 12 will be noted as being highly commended.

There will also be a fourth prize – People’s Choice award – with the winner selected by the public. The judging panel will place their top 40 shortlisted photos in a gallery and the public will be invited to vote for their favourite photo from the selection. The photo that receives the most votes will be declared winner of the People’s Choice award.

Voting will open on Friday 11 November 2016 and close a week later on Friday 18 November 2016.

Please note: the winning first, second and third place images will be omitted from the selection of 40.

The first place winning image will become the 2017 University of London calendar cover image, and the other winning and highly commended chosen prints will form the remainder of the calendar.

The judges will be looking for photos that meet the category brief, but also those that demonstrate artistic merit and originality. You do not have to provide a literal interpretation of a scene, your photo can be abstract and innovative in composition. That’s not to say that ‘simple’ won’t fit the brief just as well, it just means that the sky’s the limit!
