100th worldwide member signs up for YouTube EDU

The University of London International Programmes has signed up to the YouTube EDU channel, making it one of eight UK Universities to be selected for the partnership and YouTube EDU’s 100th worldwide member.

Professor Jonathan Kydd, Dean of the University of London International Programmes, welcomed the partnership, which is set to further reinforce the worldwide reach of the International Programmes, offering 100+ distance and flexible learning programmes to 52,000 students in 190 countries.

He said:

“This partnership places us on the YouTube EDU channel alongside the Universities of Stanford, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge. The International Programmes has been operating for more than 153 years through collaboration with the constituent Colleges of the University of London, which is internationally acclaimed for its academic rigour and cutting-edge research.”

Video resources on the new YouTube EDU channel include a vast array of learning materials and  topical discussions, all designed to help students engage with research and issues at the heart of a range of study programmes. An early indication of success is the threefold increase in viewing figures to 30,000 a month, since joining the channel in June this year.

In one such video (featured right), Professor Ian Roberts from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) speaks about the death of a 10 year-old girl who died on his intensive care unit, compelling him to explore randomised control trials - a scientific procedure used to find out whether or not a specific medical treatment works. Following the success of the ‘Crash 2’ trials, Professor Roberts explains the importance of early treatment with tranexamic acid in bleeding trauma patients. The drug could save 100,000 lives a year, thus demonstrating the pertinence of such research, and by extension, the significance of the University of London International Programmes’ Postgraduate programmes in Clinical Trials.

Professor Kydd explains:

“Although our students already have a wide range of online resources at their fingertips, the new YouTube EDU channel is an ideal addition to our distance learning provision because of the central role ICT and Online Learning plays in the thinking and operation of the University of London International Programmes”.

“With the level of exposure afforded by YouTube EDU, it allows the International Programmes to share its learning content immediately with a greater global audience. We feel confident that the new channel will continue to attract a diverse audience of prospective and current students; individuals interested in increasing their knowledge of a particular subject area; local teaching institutions that provide tuition for our students who opt for further local teaching support; and our alumni, who wish to keep up to date on the latest developments in their area of study.”

Professor Kydd concluded:
