LSE lecturer leads survey of media in sub-Saharan Africa

Led by LSE guest lecturer Dr Gerry Power, one of the most comprehensive surveys of the media ever conducted in sub-Saharan Africa has been published by the BBC World Service Trust. Dr Power's team of BBC staff and in-country researchers surveyed a total of 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for the African Media Development Initiative (AMDI).

Providing a detailed snapshot of the media landscape, the AMDI survey concludes that there has been a massive proliferation of media during the past five years, especially radio and print media. However, in spite of this growth, the African media sector faces many challenges. The study also reveals a widespread consensus with respect to the media's enormous potential to contribute significantly to development and governance in Africa.
