Gap year placements teach vital skills

According to research presented by Dr Andrew Jones, Head of School of Geography at Birkbeck, recent criticism of the usefulness of student gap years is misdirected.

Speaking at the Royal Geographical Society's annual conference, Dr Jones claimed that overseas 'gappers' gain many skills that employers value, but which universities struggle to teach. He quoted the human resources manager of a UK company as saying that a good gap year is invaluable. "People have been challenged, taken out of the comfort zone.they learn a lot of intangibles - self-discipline, getting on with people and organising themselves."

The study was based on detailed interviews with 150 'gappers' plus focus groups with employers and young people.
