‘Objects of Instruction: Treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies’, a new exhibition of SOAS's remarkably rich but little known artistic and archival collections, will open next month.
Running from 11 October to 15 December 2007, and generously funded by the Foyle Foundation, the exhibition is set to culminate in a permanent display in the new Foyle Special Collections Gallery. For the first time this will make the School’s artistic assets accessible to a wider audience, including students, scholars and members of the general public. The exhibition will bring together a broad range of fascinating objects from across Asia and Africa that are, at present, known only to a few specialists.
Among this wealth of material are illustrated Islamic manuscripts, Chinese and Japanese paintings and prints; ceramics from the Middle East and East Asia; decorative Buddhist manuscripts and sculptures from South-East Asia; contemporary African paintings and textiles; and important archaeological collections from East Asia, South Asia and the Middle East. The content will be periodically rotated, to ensure the vitality of the permanent display.
Opening hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10:30-17:00 (closed Sundays and Mondays). Admission free.
