Research Success

The research excellence of the University of London's constituent Colleges has been confirmed by an evaluation of British research published in December 2008. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) sees every university in the UK submit a dossier of their best researchers' work in 67 disciplines on which they are graded and ranked. The evaluation determines how £1.5bn of government funding is allocated.

As tables published in Times Higher Education illustrate, from a total of 132 UK universities evaluated the Institute of Cancer Research ranked in top place, while the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, LSE and UCL ranked third, joint fourth and seventh respectively. Queen Mary, University of London, rose dramatically to 13th place, from 48th place in the last RAE in 2001.

King's College London (joint 22nd), Royal Holloway (joint 24th), the School of Oriental and African Studies (joint 31st), Birkbeck (joint 33rd) and Goldsmiths (joint 35th) also rated highly.

In separate subject rankings, LSE's economics submission was particularly outstanding – the highest rated of any major subject, with 60% of their academic staff ranked as world-leading.

Other University of London Colleges such as the Institute of Education and the Royal Veterinary College performed exceptionally well in separate rankings of single-subject institutions, taking seven of the top 10 positions from a total of 27 institutions.
