Alex Boughton

Head of Business Development

Alex Boughton joined the International Programmes in July 2016 and heads up the new Business Development team. He leads the team on the planning and delivery of the expansion of the International Programmes provision across both existing and emerging markets.

Alex has worked in the field of international education for 18 years, and he was previously Head of Alumni Relations at the University of Bath and International Recruitment Manager at the University of Bristol. At Bristol, Alex’s responsibilities included managing the University’s key strategic partnerships with overseas government agencies, embassies and high commissions. He has been Deputy Chief Executive of the education think-thank, the Hansard Society, and spent three years working on international education partnerships at Marconi plc in London. Alex started his career as a teacher at the British Council in Quito, Ecuador.

Alex has worked and studied overseas for five years (Chile, Spain, France, Russia and Ecuador) and speaks Spanish, French and (basic) Russian.

Andrew Mellor, Regional Business Development Manager

Regional Business Development Manager East and SE Asia

Andrew Mellor joined the University of London’s Global Engagement Directorate in August 2016 as part of the new Business Development team.

As a Regional Business Development Manager, Andrew is responsible for building relationships and developing business across East Asia and South East Asia. He will be working to establish relationships with local organisations, government agencies, corporate partners and new teaching institutions to increase the University of London’s regional presence and drive student numbers in the region.

As part of the Business Development Team, Andrew will be working closely with colleagues from the University of London’s member institutions.

Andrew has a thorough understanding of international student recruitment and business development through work for public and private institutions - UCL Institute of Education (IOE) and INTO (City University London and UEA London). His knowledge is focused in international higher education marketing, particularly in East Asia, both as a student and from a business development perspective.

He is currently studying the MBA Higher Education Management at the UCL Institute of Education. This follows a BA dual honours in Chinese Studies and Management from the University of Sheffield and a professional development programme in Advanced Marketing at City University London.

Head of External Communications, Media and Public Relations

Binda Rai joined the University of London’s Vice-Chancellor’s office in 2005 as Head of Communications for the Central University and in 2007 moved across to the International Programmes.

Here she has been responsible for co-ordinating and delivering our 150th Anniversary celebrations in 2008; redesigning our publications; raising our profile through media and public relations as well as launching our new branding and guidelines.

Now, as Head of External Communications, Media and Public Relations Binda and her team are also responsible for delivering events, including graduation ceremonies for both the International Programmes and some of the member institutions of the University. They also focus on reputation building through public relations and events, whilst working closely with the Pro Vice-Chancellor and the Chief Operating Officer.

Binda has extensive communications experience in the public sector, including health, local government and education. She specialises in media relations, having worked as a journalist for newspapers, BBC radio, television, and in public relations.

Binda is an Economics and Sociology graduate, and has a postgraduate diploma in Journalism from City, University of London.

Ibrahim El Mayet joined the University of London’s Global Engagement Directorate in August 2016 as part of the new Business Development team.

As a Regional Business Development Manager, Ibrahim is responsible for building relationships and developing business across the Middle East and Africa. He will be working to establish relationships with local organisations, government agencies, corporate partners and new teaching institutions to increase the University of London’s regional presence and drive student numbers in the region.

As part of the Business Development Team, Ibrahim will be working closely with colleagues from the University of London’s member institutions.

Ibrahim previously worked on market development for short courses and executive programmes at Westminster Business School, and has experience developing new business and managing complex projects in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region with BBC Media Action and clients including UKTI and TVET UK.
