Professor Diana Elbourne
Course Director
"For trials to be useful, they need to be done well and so I have a particular interest in
the conduct of trials. This has involved work on the role of Data Monitoring Committees, and on
the CONSORT guidelines for the reporting of trials. I have recently published a variant of these
guidelines for a particular type of trial design in which groups or clusters of individuals are
randomised to different treatments. These cluster randomised controlled trials are an area of work
in which the School is a major player."

- When we have received your form, we will send you an acknowledgement and a student
number. Please note that we allocate a student number to everyone who applies – it does
not mean that you have been accepted onto the degree/Diploma. If you have not received an acknowledgement
within three weeks of sending in your form, please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Office
with details of your full name, the qualification for which you have applied and the date you
posted your form.
- We will notify you whether or not you have been successful.
- If you are accepted, you will be sent an offer of registration, a fee slip, a registration
form and a copy of the Regulations.
- If you decide to register you will need to complete your registration form and fee slip and
return these, along with the appropriate fee, by 31 August.
- Study will commence in October.
Notes:
- Faxed applications will not be accepted.
- Applications will only be considered when we have received the necessary documentation (including
the references).
- Applicants come to us from all over the world, with a variety of qualifications, and as a
result we have to consider each application thoroughly and on an individual basis. We regret
that it is not possible for us to give you any informal advice on your eligibility for admission.
For this reason, you must make a formal application before we can tell you whether we can accept
you.
- At its discretion, the University may sometimes consider applications received after 30 June.
All such enquiries should be made directly to the Postgraduate Admissions Office.
- There is a definite start to the study year for these courses – October each year. Materials
are dispatched, usually by courier, from the beginning of August to all students who have paid
the registration and unit fees. Even if you register as early as June, your study materials will
only be sent to you during August, in time for a September start.
- A quota is in operation in 2006/7 and registrations will be accepted on a first come, first
served basis.
