Academic Direction: Birkbeck

Birkbeck (external link) is ranked among the leading UK University institutions for its excellence in research in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Founded in 1823 as the London Mechanics' Institute and incorporated into the University of London as Birkbeck College by Royal Charter in 1920, today Birkbeck provides a unique range of degree and other courses designed specially to meet the needs of mature students. As the only University of London College to specialise in part-time higher education by evening study, Birkbeck is uniquely placed to meet the needs of the External student.

The School of Languages, Linguistics and Culture (external link) is responsible for the academic development of the BA. The Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies is one of the most renowned of its kind in the UK for the world-class level and innovative scope of its research, which has recently been awarded a 6*, the highest distinction in the nationwide Research Assessment Exercise. The ten permanent members of staff, from six different countries, specialise in diverse aspects of cultural history and critique, with a strong emphasis not only on the literary and linguistic but also the audiovisual expression of Latin America and the Iberian peninsula past and present.
