FAQs (Undergraduate)

Cost

How much does it cost?

For details on the charges made by the University you should look at the Fees information for the qualification of your choice. As a guideline, however, the total cost of fees paid to the University for a University of London degree studied through the External System is likely to be between £2,800 (sterling) and £3,800 for paper-based degrees and £9,228 for the online Classical Studies and History degrees.

Once the application handling fee has been paid, fees to the University consist of payments for registration and for examinations. Students studying with the External System will find that these fees are payable at fairly regular intervals throughout their registration with the University.

When do I have to pay?

Please refer to the Fees information for the degree that you wish to study to see which fees apply.

Most fees payable to the University consist of the Application Handling fee, Registration and Examination fees. Please see below for fees pertaining to the BA Classical Studies and BA History as these are structured differently.

The Application handling fee (where applicable) is paid when you submit your application either online or by post. If submitting your application by post, please ensure you submit the accompanying fee slip and documentary evidence to the University. The initial registration fee is paid after you are sent an 'Offer letter'; when we receive your completed registration form and Initial registration fee, we register you with the External System and send you your study pack so that you can begin studying. The continuing registration fee (where applicable) is payable in October and is paid only in the second and each subsequent year of registration; when we receive this we send you the study materials you will need for the following year. The Examination entry fee is paid in January if you choose to enter yourself for an examination(s); if you decide that you do not want to enter an examination(s) in a particular year, then no examination fee is paid. Examinations take place in May/June.

For online programmes (the BA Classical Studies and the BA History) payment of fees is organised differently; when you register you can either pay the total amount upfront or pay as you go with a one-off registration fee plus the fee for each module that you study.

How can I pay?

The acceptable methods of payment to the University are:
sterling cheque
sterling bankers' draft
sterling postal order

all made payable to the University of London
OR
by a credit card that is recognised by either MasterCard Inc. or the Visa group
OR by a JCB card or by a British Solo or Electron card.

If you come to the Fees Office in person payments can also be made by cash.

Are there any other costs I should consider?

Besides the fees payable to the University, you will need to budget for textbooks. This is estimated to be in the region of £80-£150 per year for the online degrees, and up to £300 per year for all other qualifications. You should also budget for the cost of any tuition that you arrange, and the fee that is levied by your local examination centre to cover its costs.
